Drawings for Paintings

Drawings are intimate. They require close attention. The images below are large so the viewer can get inside the work. The drawings were done with later oil paintings in mind. Each work is noting something, color, value, composition etc.. for later use. To me they are also art in themselves.

“Drawing is a thinking mans game.” – Frank Porcu – My anatomy teacher at the Art Students League for a few years. It is where the “heavy lifting” is done. It reflects the artist directly and shows everything.

After this drawing was completed on site, a grid was drawn over the work corresponding to a grid on the canvas for the painting. The drawing was then transferred to the canvas.

In order to preserve this drawing I added a sheet of tracing paper over the top and drew the grid on that.
