Toulouse Lautrec
By Simon Levenson • Nov 8th, 2009 • Category: Museums And GalleriesA writer hears. A painter sees. If you want to make great paintings you must see great paintings (and drawings).
Toulouse Lautrec is a great painter and a great drawer yet he is unknown to so many of the people I mention him too. Everyone is aware of Degas who as a younger man was a great painter but who in my opinion was a better sculptor than painter, but so few are aware of his contemporary Lautrec.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art has a small collection of Lautrec, on display now, about eight. In total the number is closer to twelve. Make a point if you visit to take a look at them, find them, seek them out, ask for Robert at the information desk in the main hall, he will point you in the right direction.
