Drawings for Paintings

Drawings are intimate. They require close attention. The images below are large so the viewer can get inside the work. The drawings were done with later oil paintings in mind. Each work is noting something, color, value, composition etc.. for later use. To me they are also art in themselves.

Central Park - Pencil on Paper - 11x3 - 2011

The drawing above shows how I get everything I am looking at onto the page in roughly the right area. You can see hash marks around the drawing with 1/2 – 1/3-  1/4 and 1/8 marks along the horizontal. When dealing with an image this long, it is the only way to make sure things are being place correctly. The vertical is shorter so I use fewer measurements.

“Drawing is a thinking mans game.” – Frank Porcu – My anatomy teacher at the Art Students League for a few years. It is where the “heavy lifting” is done. It reflects the artist directly and shows everything.

After this drawing was completed on site, a grid was drawn over the work corresponding to a grid on the canvas for the painting. The drawing was then transferred to the canvas.

In order to preserve this drawing I added a sheet of tracing paper over the top and drew the grid on that.

I “reduce” the composition to focus on what is most important to me. While drawing number 3 is the simplest, number 4 focuses on the fountain and buildings and that is what I am after in my painting.
