Greetings from Paderborn

I am in Germany working to create the artwork for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority – Arts for Transit commission I received this year. I am working with Glasmalerei Peters, a third generation glass art company that is extremely impressive. I am working with the youngest, the eventual fourth generation, of the Peters, Jan, who has been nothing less than sweet and accomadating, spending the entire first, jet-lagged day showing me the two house/factories where work is done by some 65 workers ranging in everything from the latest computer cut and colored glass to antique glass for the restoration of the Berlin Cathedral.

This is a truly impressive company and family. They invited me over to lunch in their home which I believe is a custom for artists who stay with them. Jan’s mother is warm and friendly and his father, who is now running the very large company was there and told us a little about his trip to the United States when he was nineteen. Jan’s younger sister and friend from high school joined us to.

So far besides the McDonalds and the homeless guy at the train station (which Jan claims he hired to make me feel more at home coming from New York) I do feel I am away in a special place.

They have enormous science fiction windmills here that they don’t seem to notice anymore.

3) and finally Jan at his desk.
